Nature and Scope of Economic Geography
Economic geography studies the spatial organisation of economic activity - where production, distribution, exchange, and consumption occur, why they are located where they are, and what consequences their spatial distribution has for places and people. It investigates the uneven distribution of economic activity across the earth's surface: why some regions are wealthy and others poor, why some industries cluster in particular places, how transport and communication networks shape the geography of trade, and how the global economy is organised hierarchically across space. Economic geography draws on economics, regional science, sociology, and political economy, and has been shaped by successive theoretical paradigms from classical location theory to Marxist political economy to contemporary approaches emphasising knowledge, institutions, and networks.
World Economic Development: Measurement and Problems
Economic development refers to the sustained improvement in the material standard of living of a population, typically accompanied by structural transformation of the economy from subsistence agriculture toward industry and services, urbanisation, and improvements in health and education. The measurement of economic development has been debated intensively, as different measures capture different aspects of well-being and generate different pictures of the world's economic geography.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total monetary value of all goods and services produced within a country's borders in a given year. GDP per capita (total GDP divided by population) is the most widely used measure of average living standards. Gross National Product (GNP) or Gross National Income (GNI) includes income earned by a country's residents abroad and excludes income earned by foreigners within the country - a distinction that matters for countries with large remittance flows or multinational operations. Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) adjustments correct for differences in price levels across countries, allowing more meaningful comparisons of real living standards - on a PPP basis, India's GDP ranks third in the world, reflecting the lower cost of many goods and services in India relative to the United States.
GDP per capita has several well-known limitations as a development measure. It measures average income but not its distribution - a country can have high average income alongside extreme inequality. It counts expenditures that reflect social problems (crime, pollution cleanup, disaster recovery) as economic activity. It ignores unpaid work including household labour and care work that is disproportionately performed by women. It does not capture environmental degradation or resource depletion that may be reducing future well-being while current GDP rises. It fails to measure dimensions of well-being including health, education, security, political freedom, and social connection that people value as much as income.
The Human Development Index (HDI), developed by Mahbub ul-Haq and Amartya Sen for the UNDP's annual Human Development Reports since 1990, combines three dimensions: a long and healthy life (measured by life expectancy at birth); knowledge (measured by mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling); and a decent standard of living (measured by GNI per capita at PPP). By this measure, Norway consistently ranks highest and several sub-Saharan African countries rank lowest, while India ranks in the medium human development range. The Inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI) discounts each dimension for the degree of inequality in its distribution, typically reducing scores significantly for developing countries. The Gender Development Index and Gender Inequality Index capture dimensions of gender-based disadvantage.
Amartya Sen's capability approach, articulated in Development as Freedom (1999), argues that development should be understood as the expansion of human freedoms and capabilities - the real opportunities people have to live lives they have reason to value. Income is instrumentally important as a means to capability but is not itself the goal of development. Substantive freedoms include political freedoms, economic facilities, social opportunities (health and education), transparency guarantees, and protective security. This framework has influenced the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), developed by Sabina Alkire and James Foster, which measures deprivation across ten indicators in health, education, and living standards simultaneously rather than using income alone.
The world's economies are classified in various ways for analytical and policy purposes. The World Bank classifies countries by GNI per capita into low-income, lower-middle-income, upper-middle-income, and high-income groups, updating thresholds annually. The United Nations classifies Least Developed Countries (LDCs) based on low income, weak human assets, and high economic vulnerability - there are currently around 46 LDCs, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The IMF distinguishes advanced economies from emerging market and developing economies. The development debate has moved from a simple developed-developing binary toward recognition of a more complex hierarchy including the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), the MINT group (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey), and the Newly Industrialising Economies (NIEs) of East and Southeast Asia.
Major problems of world economic development include absolute poverty (the World Bank's international poverty line of USD 2.15 per day at 2017 PPP prices); food insecurity and malnutrition; inadequate access to health care and education; lack of safe water and sanitation; unemployment and underemployment; gender inequality; environmental degradation; and the vulnerability of developing countries to external shocks including commodity price fluctuations, financial crises, and climate change impacts. The UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, 2015-2030) set 17 goals and 169 targets addressing these problems across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. India, as the most populous country and home to the largest number of people in poverty by some measures, plays a central role in global development outcomes.
World Resources and Their Distribution
Natural resources are components of the natural environment that human societies find useful for satisfying needs and wants. They are classified as renewable resources (those that regenerate on human timescales through natural processes, including solar energy, water, forests, fish, and soils) and non-renewable resources (those that exist in finite quantities formed over geological timescales and are depleted by use, including fossil fuels and most mineral deposits). A further distinction is made between stock resources (non-renewable) and flow resources (renewable). The concept of reserves refers to the known quantity of a non-renewable resource that can be economically extracted with current technology, as distinct from the total resource endowment in the earth's crust.
The geographical distribution of natural resources is highly uneven and does not correspond to the distribution of population or economic demand. This geographical mismatch between resource endowment and resource consumption is a fundamental driver of international trade and geopolitical tension. Resource-rich countries include those with large hydrocarbon reserves such as Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iran, Iraq, and Venezuela; mineral-rich countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (cobalt, coltan), Chile and Peru (copper), South Africa (platinum group metals, gold, diamonds), and Australia (iron ore, bauxite, uranium); and countries with large agricultural potential such as the United States, Brazil, and Argentina in the temperate grassland zones.
Water resources are unevenly distributed globally and within countries, and water stress is increasing due to population growth, agricultural demand, industrial use, and climate change. Freshwater constitutes only about 2.5 percent of total water on earth, of which about 68 percent is locked in ice caps and glaciers, about 30 percent is groundwater, and less than 1 percent is in surface water bodies including rivers, lakes, and wetlands accessible for human use. Asia has about 36 percent of the world's freshwater runoff but 60 percent of the world's population. The concept of virtual water, developed by Tony Allan, refers to the water embedded in the production of goods - importing water-intensive goods effectively imports water from water-rich to water-scarce regions. India faces severe water stress: the Indo-Gangetic Plain depends heavily on groundwater, much of which is being mined at unsustainable rates; the Deccan Plateau faces recurrent drought; and transboundary water disputes (Cauvery, Mahanadi, Krishna, Godavari) are persistent political conflicts.
Forest resources cover approximately 31 percent of the world's land area, with the largest areas in Russia, Brazil, Canada, the United States, and China. Tropical forests, particularly the Amazon basin, the Congo basin, and the forests of Southeast Asia and the Western Ghats, have the highest biodiversity but are being lost most rapidly to agricultural expansion (soy, palm oil, cattle ranching), logging, and infrastructure development. Deforestation rates are highest in Brazil, Indonesia, and several African countries. India has a relatively low forest cover of about 24 percent (including all tree cover) against the National Forest Policy goal of 33 percent, with significant variation from the densely forested northeastern states to the arid and semi-arid western states.
Marine resources include fisheries (providing 20 percent of global animal protein consumption), seabed minerals including polymetallic nodules rich in manganese, nickel, copper, and cobalt in the abyssal plains, hydrothermal vent deposits of zinc, copper, silver, and gold, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts on seamounts, and gas hydrates (methane clathrates) in continental margins. India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 2.02 million square kilometres is among the largest in the world and contains significant fisheries, oil and gas deposits (Bombay High, Krishna-Godavari basin), and potential for deep-sea mineral extraction. The Blue Economy concept, encompassing sustainable use of marine resources, has become a policy priority for India.
Energy Resources
Energy resources are the foundation of modern industrial economies. The global energy system is dominated by fossil fuels - coal, oil, and natural gas - which together provide approximately 80 percent of primary energy globally, down from about 87 percent in 2000 as renewable energy grows rapidly. The combustion of fossil fuels is the primary source of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change, making the energy transition toward renewable sources the central challenge of sustainable development.
Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel and the largest single source of electricity generation globally. It is classified by carbon content and energy value from highest to lowest as anthracite, bituminous, sub-bituminous, and lignite. The largest coal reserves are in the United States, Russia, Australia, China, and India. India has the fifth-largest coal reserves in the world and is the second-largest producer and consumer after China. Indian coal is largely of Gondwana bituminous type found in the Damodar Valley (Jharia, Raniganj), Mahanadi Valley, Godavari Valley, and Wardha Valley coalfields. India's coal is high in ash content (30-45 percent) compared to international standards (10-15 percent), reducing calorific value and increasing pollution. Jharia coalfield in Jharkhand, the richest coal deposit in India, has been burning underground for over a century due to spontaneous combustion.
Petroleum (crude oil) is the most traded commodity in the world and remains central to transport, petrochemicals, and many industrial processes. The largest proved reserves are concentrated in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, UAE together hold over 48 percent of world reserves), Venezuela (Orinoco heavy oil belt), Russia, and Libya. The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), founded in 1960 and now including 13 members, coordinates production among major exporters to influence prices. The United States became the world's largest oil producer by 2018 due to the shale revolution - hydraulic fracturing (fracking) technology unlocking tight oil and shale gas from low-permeability rock formations. India has limited domestic oil reserves concentrated in the Bombay High offshore field (operated by ONGC), the Barmer basin in Rajasthan (operated by Cairn/Vedanta), the Upper Assam basin, and the Krishna-Godavari basin offshore. India imports approximately 85 percent of its crude oil requirements, making it highly vulnerable to global price fluctuations and supply disruptions.
Natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel and has grown rapidly as a source of electricity generation (displacing coal) and industrial feedstock. Proved reserves are largest in Russia, Iran, Qatar, Turkmenistan, and the United States. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) technology, which cools gas to -162 degrees Celsius to reduce its volume 600-fold for shipping, has globalised the gas market. India's domestic gas production from the KG-D6 block operated by Reliance Industries (now declining), the Mumbai High, and other fields meets only a fraction of demand; India has been expanding LNG import capacity at Hazira, Dahej, Kochi, Dabhol, and Ennore terminals. The government's goal of increasing the share of natural gas in India's energy mix from about 6 percent to 15 percent by 2030 requires both domestic production growth and import infrastructure expansion.
Nuclear energy provides about 10 percent of global electricity generation, with the largest shares in France (70 percent), Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary, and Belgium. Nuclear power uses fission of uranium-235 or plutonium-239 to generate heat for steam turbines. Uranium reserves are largest in Kazakhstan, Australia, Namibia, Canada, and Russia. India has an ambitious nuclear energy programme under the Department of Atomic Energy, with 23 operating reactors providing about 3 percent of electricity, and plans for significant expansion including large light-water reactors (Kudankulam with Russian collaboration), indigenous PHWRs at multiple sites, and a long-term thorium breeder reactor programme leveraging India's large thorium reserves in beach sands (monazite) of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) but concluded the landmark India-US Civil Nuclear Agreement (123 Agreement) in 2008, enabling civilian nuclear cooperation with the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, hydropower, biomass, geothermal, and tidal energy. Solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power have seen dramatic cost reductions (solar PV costs down over 90 percent since 2010) and are now often the cheapest sources of new electricity generation globally. Hydropower provides about 16 percent of global electricity and is the largest source of renewable electricity; the largest hydropower producers are China (Three Gorges Dam at 22.5 GW is the world's largest), Brazil, Canada, the United States, and Russia. India has large hydropower potential (approximately 148 GW technically feasible) concentrated in the northeastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Western Ghats, though environmental and displacement concerns have constrained development.
India's renewable energy ambitions are among the most ambitious in the world. The National Solar Mission targets 500 GW of solar capacity by 2030 (from approximately 70 GW in 2023). The International Solar Alliance (ISA), co-founded by India and France at COP21 in 2015, brings together 120 sunshine countries to promote solar deployment. India's total renewable energy capacity target is 500 GW by 2030, supporting its commitment at COP26 to achieve net zero emissions by 2070. The Gujarat-Rajasthan corridor hosts some of the world's largest solar parks including Bhadla Solar Park in Rajasthan (2.25 GW, the world's largest single solar park) and Pavagada Solar Park in Karnataka. Wind energy is concentrated in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh.
Mineral Resources and Their World Distribution
Mineral resources are inorganic solid substances formed by geological processes, valued for their physical or chemical properties and used in industry, construction, electronics, and agriculture. They are classified as metallic minerals (iron, copper, aluminium, gold, silver, lead, zinc, manganese, nickel, chromium, platinum group metals) and non-metallic minerals (limestone, gypsum, mica, phosphate, potash, sulphur, gemstones, building materials). Critical minerals - those essential for clean energy technologies, digital infrastructure, and defence - have become a geopolitical priority; these include lithium, cobalt, nickel, rare earth elements, graphite, and manganese.
Iron ore is the most important metallic mineral by volume, used in steel production fundamental to construction, transport, machinery, and manufacturing. Proved reserves are largest in Australia (Pilbara region), Brazil (Carajas), Russia, China, and India. India has the fourth-largest iron ore reserves in the world, concentrated in the Chhattisgarh-Jharkhand-Odisha-Goa belt (Bailadila, Dalli-Rajhara, Noamundi, Singhbhum), and is among the world's top five producers and exporters. The iron ore-steel complex underpins India's industrial heartland in the Chhotanagpur plateau region, with steel plants at Bhilai (Chhattisgarh, Russian collaboration), Bokaro (Jharkhand, Soviet collaboration), Rourkela (Odisha, German collaboration), Durgapur (West Bengal, British collaboration), and Jamshedpur (private, TATA Steel - India's first integrated steel plant, 1907).
Bauxite is the ore of aluminium, the lightest structural metal and the most abundant metal in the earth's crust. The largest reserves are in Guinea, Australia, Vietnam, Brazil, and Jamaica. India has significant bauxite reserves in Odisha (Koraput, Kalahandi), Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Copper is essential for electrical wiring, electronics, and renewable energy infrastructure. Chile (Atacama Desert) has the world's largest copper reserves; other major sources include Peru, Australia, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. India has very limited copper reserves concentrated in Rajasthan (Khetri), Madhya Pradesh (Malanjkhand), and Jharkhand (Singhbhum), making it heavily dependent on imports.
Manganese is used primarily as an alloying element in steel production (approximately 90 percent of use) and in battery cathodes for electric vehicles. South Africa, Ukraine, Brazil, Australia, and Gabon have the largest reserves. India has significant manganese deposits in Odisha (Bonai-Keonjhar), Maharashtra (Nagpur-Bhandara), and Karnataka (Sandur). Gold reserves are largest in Australia, Russia, South Africa, and the United States. India's gold reserves are limited to the Kolar Gold Fields (Karnataka, now largely exhausted) and small deposits in Rajasthan and Jharkhand, making it the world's largest gold importer by some measures as demand is driven by jewellery and investment.
Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 elements including lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, and the heavier rare earths dysprosium and terbium, used in permanent magnets for wind turbines and electric vehicle motors, phosphors for LEDs and displays, catalysts, and defence applications. China dominates REE production (approximately 60 percent of global output) and refining (approximately 85 percent), giving it substantial strategic leverage. India has significant rare earth reserves in beach sand minerals (monazite, a thorium-REE phosphate mineral) in coastal areas of Kerala (Chavara), Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha; these are processed by the state-owned Indian Rare Earths Limited. The India-Australia Critical Minerals Investment Partnership and similar agreements aim to diversify supply chains away from Chinese dominance.
Lithium, essential for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, grid storage, and consumer electronics, is concentrated in the Lithium Triangle of Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile (the high-altitude Atacama salt flats contain approximately 50 percent of world lithium reserves in brine form). Australia mines spodumene hard-rock lithium from the Pilbara region. A significant lithium discovery was announced in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir in 2023, estimated at 5.9 million tonnes - potentially the world's fifth-largest deposit - though exploration is at an early stage. India's critical mineral security, including lithium supply for its EV and energy storage ambitions, has become a major policy priority.
Phosphate rock, the primary source of phosphorus for fertilisers, has the largest reserves in Morocco and Western Sahara (which together hold approximately 70 percent of world reserves), giving Morocco exceptional strategic importance in global food security. Other major producers include China, Egypt, Russia, and Jordan. India has limited phosphate resources and imports large quantities of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) for agriculture. Potash (potassium salts for fertiliser) is dominated by Canada (Saskatchewan) and Belarus/Russia in the global supply, giving the Belarus-Russia axis considerable leverage in agricultural input markets - a leverage illustrated by the supply disruptions following sanctions after 2022.
Agriculture: World Types and Problems
Agriculture is the cultivation of plants and raising of animals for food, fibre, fuel, and other products. It occupies approximately 50 percent of the world's habitable land (cropland plus permanent pastures) and employs approximately 1 billion people globally, with the share being highest in low-income countries (60-80 percent of employment) and lowest in high-income countries (2-5 percent). The geography of agriculture reflects the interaction of physical factors (climate, soils, terrain, water availability) with economic factors (market access, labour costs, technology, land tenure), social factors (cultural preferences, gender roles, indigenous knowledge), and political factors (agricultural policy, land reform, trade agreements).
Subsistence agriculture systems are those in which production is primarily for the farmer's own consumption rather than for sale, and which employ traditional inputs (human and animal labour, organic manures, locally saved seeds) with minimal purchased inputs. Primitive subsistence agriculture includes shifting cultivation (slash and burn / jhum cultivation in India's northeastern states and tribal areas), where forest is cleared, farmed for a few years until soil fertility declines, and then abandoned for natural regeneration while the cultivator moves to a new plot. This system is ecologically sustainable at low population densities but breaks down as population pressure shortens the fallow cycle. Nomadic herding is practiced in arid and semi-arid environments where rainfall is insufficient for rain-fed cropping, with pastoralists moving seasonally with their herds of cattle, sheep, goats, or camels to access pasture and water.
Intensive subsistence agriculture, practiced across the densely populated agricultural regions of South and East Asia, involves the intensive cultivation of small plots using large amounts of human labour per unit area to maximise output from limited land. Wet rice cultivation (paddy cultivation) in the monsoon Asia region is the archetype: multiple crops per year where water and temperature permit, careful land preparation and transplanting, complex irrigation management, and yields that support high population densities. The Green Revolution technologies (high-yielding varieties developed at IRRI for rice and CIMMYT for wheat, chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and irrigation) transformed this system from the 1960s, dramatically increasing yields but also increasing dependence on purchased inputs, favouring larger and better-capitalized farmers, and creating environmental problems including groundwater depletion, soil degradation, and pesticide contamination.
Commercial agriculture systems are oriented toward market production, typically with larger farm sizes, greater mechanisation, and specialisation in fewer crops. Mediterranean agriculture, practiced in the Mediterranean basin, California, central Chile, the Western Cape of South Africa, and southwestern Australia, is characterised by specialisation in crops suited to the hot, dry summer and mild, wet winter: wheat and barley (winter crops), grapes (viticulture for wine and table grapes), olives (for oil), citrus fruits, and vegetables for export markets. The Mediterranean diet, based on these products, has been recognised for its health benefits and listed as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. Plantation agriculture in tropical and subtropical regions involves large estates producing single export crops - tea (Assam, Darjeeling, Sri Lanka), coffee (Karnataka, Vietnam, Brazil), rubber (Kerala, Malaysia, Indonesia), sugarcane (Brazil, India), cotton (India's black cotton soil belt, United States, Egypt), oil palm (Malaysia, Indonesia), cocoa (Ghana, Ivory Coast), and bananas (Central America, Philippines) - with wage labour, significant capital investment, and close integration with global commodity markets and food companies.
Mixed farming, the combination of crop cultivation and livestock raising on the same farm, is characteristic of northwestern Europe and parts of North America, where crops provide fodder for animals and livestock manure maintains soil fertility. This integration creates resilience against price fluctuations in either crops or livestock markets. Dairying is a specialised form of livestock farming oriented toward milk production, concentrated near urban markets due to the perishability of fresh milk. Denmark, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and the states of Anand (Gujarat) and Karnal (Haryana) in India are major dairying regions. The Amul cooperative model, originating in Anand under Verghese Kurien's Operation Flood (1970-1996), is one of the world's largest food brand and cooperative success stories, linking 3.6 million dairy farmers to urban milk markets.
Extensive commercial grain farming is practiced in the interior grassland regions of North America (Great Plains), Argentina (Pampas), Australia (wheat belt of Western Australia and southern states), Ukraine and southern Russia (the steppes), and Kazakhstan, where large mechanised farms grow wheat, maize, soybeans, and other grains for export markets. These regions are characterised by large farm sizes (hundreds to thousands of hectares), high mechanisation, low labour inputs per hectare, and high sensitivity to weather variability. The United States, Canada, Australia, Russia, Ukraine, and Argentina are the world's dominant wheat exporters. The disruption of Ukrainian and Russian wheat exports following the 2022 invasion triggered a global food price shock particularly affecting importing countries in North Africa and the Middle East, illustrating the geopolitical dimensions of agricultural trade.
Market gardening and truck farming refer to the intensive production of vegetables, fruits, and flowers for nearby urban markets. Greenhouse cultivation, particularly in the Netherlands (the world's largest exporter of agricultural products after the United States despite its small size, due to highly intensive greenhouse horticulture), Israel, and increasingly in India's peri-urban areas, uses controlled environments to achieve year-round production independent of climate. Protected cultivation under polyhouses and shade nets has expanded rapidly in India's vegetable and flower producing regions including Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, and Karnataka.
World agricultural problems include: food insecurity and hunger (approximately 690 million people are undernourished globally; India has the largest number of undernourished people in the world at approximately 190-200 million by FAO estimates, a troubling figure given India's status as a major food exporter in aggregate terms); soil degradation through erosion, salinisation (waterlogging and salt accumulation in irrigated soils - affecting approximately 20 percent of the world's irrigated area), nutrient depletion, compaction, and loss of organic matter; water scarcity and groundwater depletion (the Punjab-Haryana Green Revolution belt has critically depleted groundwater tables due to rice cultivation); environmental pollution through chemical fertilisers and pesticides; biodiversity loss as agricultural expansion destroys habitats and as genetic diversity in crops and livestock declines with the spread of high-yielding varieties; farm income instability due to commodity price volatility; land tenure insecurity affecting investment incentives in many developing countries; and the structural disadvantage of small and marginal farmers in market access, credit, insurance, and price realisation. India-specific agricultural problems include fragmentation of landholdings (average holding size of approximately 1.1 hectares), the agrarian distress driving farmer suicides particularly in Maharashtra, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, inadequate cold chain and storage infrastructure causing post-harvest losses of 15-25 percent, and the policy distortions created by the Minimum Support Price system and input subsidies that encourage overproduction of water-intensive crops like paddy and sugarcane in water-scarce regions.
Industry: Location Theory and World Industrial Patterns
Industrial location theory seeks to explain why manufacturing industries establish themselves in particular locations. Alfred Weber's theory of industrial location (1909) modelled the factory location decision as minimisation of total costs, combining transport costs (to raw materials and markets), labour costs, and agglomeration economies. Weber identified material index - the ratio of localised material weight to product weight - as the key determinant of whether an industry is raw-material-oriented (high material index, such as iron and steel) or market-oriented (low material index or high proportional weight gain, such as soft drinks and bread). Heavy industries with high material index and industries using perishable materials locate near raw material sources; industries with low material index or serving diverse local demand locate near markets; industries saving through agglomeration (clustering) may override the transport cost minimum to benefit from shared infrastructure, labour markets, and knowledge spillovers.
Agglomeration economies, the cost savings that arise from the geographic concentration of economic activity, are of two types. Localisation economies arise from the concentration of firms in the same industry: access to specialised labour, specialised suppliers, specialised services, and industry-specific knowledge spillovers. Urbanisation economies arise from location in a large and diverse city: access to a large and diverse labour market, diverse suppliers, business services, infrastructure, and the innovation that emerges from the density and diversity of urban economic activity. Marshallian industrial districts - geographic concentrations of small and medium enterprises in the same industry (Surat's diamond and textile industries, Tirupur's hosiery industry, Ludhiana's bicycle and knitwear industries, Moradabad's brassware industry) - generate localisation economies that allow small firms to achieve collective efficiency comparable to large corporations.
The new economic geography, associated primarily with Paul Krugman (Nobel Prize 2008), modelled the emergence of a core-periphery economic geography from the interaction of increasing returns to scale (firms benefit from producing at larger scale), transport costs (lower costs favour concentration of production), and forward and backward linkages between firms (concentration of demand and supply encourages further concentration). This circular causation produces a self-reinforcing process of agglomeration once started, but also suggests that historical accidents and small events can determine which places become cores and which become peripheral - path dependence and lock-in are central features of economic geography.
Iron and steel industry location has shifted historically from coal-field locations (when coal was heavier than ore and the dominant transport cost) to ore-field locations (as ore processing efficiency improved and ore weights dominated) to coastal locations (as imported ore and coal lowered costs at tidewater sites, and as steel markets shifted to coastal regions). India's integrated steel plants reflect these historical phases: coal-field location at Jharia-Burnpur, ore-field proximity at Rourkela, Durgapur, and Bokaro near the Chhotanagpur mineral belt, and coastal integration at Vizag Steel (Visakhapatnam Steel Plant) and the proposed coastal steel plants. JSW Steel at Bellary-Hospet (near iron ore) and Tata Steel's expansion at Kalinganagar in Odisha reflect continued domestic resource orientation.
Textile industries have followed a characteristic geographical progression from early industrial locations in temperate countries (Manchester cotton, Yorkshire wool, New England mills) to developing country locations (India, China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia) driven by lower labour costs. Tirupur in Tamil Nadu, Surat in Gujarat, and Ludhiana in Punjab illustrate the industrial district model in Indian textiles. Bangladesh has become the world's second-largest garment exporter (after China) by specialising entirely in ready-made garments (RMG) for export, employing approximately 4 million workers (predominantly women) in labour-intensive production. The global fast fashion value chain, controlled by brands in Europe and North America, sources production from the cheapest available locations while retaining design, marketing, and retail value in the high-wage core.
The information technology and electronics industries illustrate the geography of knowledge-intensive industries. Silicon Valley in California emerged as the global centre of semiconductor and software innovation through the combination of Stanford University research spillovers, defence contracts, venture capital, and agglomeration of human capital. Bangalore (Bengaluru) emerged as India's Silicon Valley through the concentration of engineering talent, presence of public sector defence and space research institutions (HAL, ISRO, DRDO, NAL), real estate advantage relative to Mumbai, and the first-mover advantage established by Texas Instruments and Infosys in the 1980s and 1990s. The Indian IT industry cluster spans Bengaluru, Hyderabad (Cyberabad), Chennai, Pune, and the National Capital Region (Gurugram-Noida), generating approximately USD 200 billion in revenue and employing over 5 million professionals, making IT-BPM the largest private sector employer of formal workers in India and the largest source of services export revenue.
Transport Geography and World Trade
Transport networks are the arteries of the economy, enabling the spatial separation of production and consumption that modern specialisation requires. Transport costs - determined by distance, mode, volume, and infrastructure quality - shape patterns of industrial location, agricultural land use, urban form, and international trade. Distance-decay in economic interaction is the empirical regularity that interaction between places declines with distance, though the steepness of this decline varies by mode of transport and type of commodity.
Ocean shipping carries approximately 90 percent of world trade by volume and is the foundation of economic globalisation. Container shipping, introduced in the 1960s, dramatically reduced handling costs and enabled just-in-time global supply chains. The largest container ports are in China (Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hong Kong), Singapore, Busan, Rotterdam, and Port Klang. India's major ports include Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Mumbai, India's largest container port), Mundra (the largest private port, operated by Adani Ports), Kandla, Chennai, Vizag, and Kochi. Chokepoints - narrow straits and canals through which concentrated volumes of shipping pass - have geopolitical significance: the Strait of Malacca (handles approximately 25 percent of world trade), the Strait of Hormuz (approximately 20 percent of global oil supply), the Suez Canal (approximately 12 percent of world trade), the Panama Canal, and the Strait of Bab-el-Mandeb (Red Sea gateway).
World trade has grown dramatically since 1945 through successive rounds of multilateral trade liberalisation under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and since 1995 the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and through regional trade agreements. Trade in goods (merchandise trade) dominated historically; trade in services (financial services, IT, tourism, education, health, transport) has grown rapidly and now constitutes approximately 25 percent of world trade by value. China became the world's largest exporter of merchandise in 2009, with the United States remaining the world's largest importer. The rise of global value chains (GVCs), in which production is fragmented across multiple countries with each contributing specific tasks, has transformed the geography of trade: smartphone assembly in China uses components from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Germany, designed by American companies with intellectual property owned in Ireland. India participates in GVCs primarily through IT services and increasingly through electronics assembly (Apple's contract manufacturers Foxconn and Pegatron expanding in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka) and pharmaceuticals (India is the world's largest supplier of generic medicines by volume).
Economic Geography of India
India's economic geography reflects its vast spatial diversity across ecological zones, its colonial inheritance of infrastructure and deindustrialisation, and the spatial outcomes of post-independence development planning. Regional economic inequality is a persistent challenge: per capita income in Goa (the wealthiest state) is approximately six times that of Bihar (the poorest), while the BIMARU states (Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh) account for a disproportionate share of poverty and human development deficits despite being the most populous states.
The colonial spatial economy was characterised by the concentration of port cities as export gateways (Bombay, Calcutta, Madras), the construction of railways primarily to extract raw materials to ports rather than to integrate the domestic economy, and the deindustrialisation of Indian handicraft and textile industries through competition from Manchester imports. The colonial economy was organised to transfer raw materials (cotton, jute, indigo, opium, wheat) from the interior to the ports and onwards to Britain, and to import manufactured goods in return. This spatial structure shaped the economic geography that independent India inherited.
Post-independence development planning through the Five Year Plans (1951-2017) employed a mixed economy strategy combining public sector dominance in heavy industry (steel, chemicals, machinery, defence) with private sector activity in consumer goods and services. The spatial pattern of public sector investment created industrial centres in interior locations (Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur, Rourkela, Trombay, Gorakhpur) as deliberate counter-poles to the colonial port city concentration. Special economic zones (SEZs), the Special Economic Package for backward areas, and the industrial corridors (Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor, and others) represent more recent spatial strategies for industrial development and employment generation.
Agriculture remains the primary livelihood for approximately 45-50 percent of India's workforce, though it contributes only about 17-18 percent of GDP - a structural characteristic of underdevelopment in which labour is trapped in low-productivity activities. The Green Revolution transformed agricultural productivity and food security but was geographically concentrated in the Punjab-Haryana wheat belt and parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for rice, creating a new geography of agricultural surplus and deficit. The National Food Security Act (2013) provides subsidised grain to approximately two-thirds of the population through the Public Distribution System, with procurement concentrated in Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh. Agricultural export commodities include rice (basmati and non-basmati), spices, marine products, cotton, and horticulture products.
The services sector now contributes approximately 55-60 percent of India's GDP and has driven growth since liberalisation in 1991. The geography of services growth is concentrated in a handful of metropolitan areas: Mumbai (financial services, entertainment, head offices), Delhi-NCR (government, IT, media, head offices), Bengaluru (IT, aerospace, biotechnology), Hyderabad (IT, pharmaceuticals), Chennai (IT, automobiles, logistics), and Pune (IT, automobiles, education). This metropolitan concentration of high-value services employment drives spatial inequality between the dynamic service economy cities and the agriculture-dependent hinterland, and within cities between the formal technology and finance sectors and the large informal economy of petty trade, domestic service, construction, and transport.
