Concept of Ethnoarchaeology

Ethnoarchaeology is the ethnographic study of living peoples for the purpose of interpreting the archaeological record. It bridges two traditionally separate disciplines: archaeology, which reconstructs past human behaviour from material remains, and ethnography, which studies living human societies through direct observation. The fundamental premise is that material remains produced by living societies, when studied systematically, can serve as analogies for understanding the formation, content, and meaning of material remains at archaeological sites.

The term was first used systematically by Jesse Walter Fewkes in 1900, studying Hopi pottery to interpret prehistoric Anasazi ceramics. Ethnoarchaeology as a recognised subfield emerged primarily in the 1960s and 1970s, associated with the New Archaeology (processual archaeology) and its emphasis on middle-range theory. Lewis Binford's research among the Nunamiut Eskimo, Nunamiut Ethnoarchaeology (1978), is the defining statement of the modern programme.

Ethnoarchaeology differs from experimental archaeology (which replicates past technologies) and use-wear analysis (which studies microscopic tool traces). What distinguishes ethnoarchaeology is direct observation of living people using, discarding, and creating material culture in its full social and ecological context.

Theoretical Foundations: The Analogical Argument

The use of ethnographic analogy in archaeology has a long history. 19th-century evolutionary anthropologists treated contemporary hunter-gatherers as survivals of earlier evolutionary stages and used descriptions of their technology and economy as direct analogues for prehistoric peoples. This approach was criticised for assuming that modern peoples in similar ecological zones as prehistoric peoples would have identical cultural practices, and for ignoring vast amounts of history separating prehistoric from living populations.

Modern ethnoarchaeology replaced crude direct analogy with a rigorous programme of middle-range theory: propositions that link the static material record archaeologists observe with the dynamic human behaviours that produced it. Since archaeologists cannot directly observe the past, they need a principled basis for inferring behaviour from material remains. Ethnoarchaeology provides this by documenting, in living societies, specific relationships between behaviour and material output under observable conditions.

Two main forms of analogy are used:

  • Formal analogy (general comparative analogy):: Based solely on similarity of form between ethnographic and archaeological materials. This is the weakest form because formal similarity may be produced by very different processes.
  • Relational analogy:: Based on demonstrated, causal relationships between behaviour and material correlates, validated across multiple independent cases. This is the strongest and most defensible form.

Scope of Ethnoarchaeology in India

India is one of the most important regions in the world for ethnoarchaeological research because of three overlapping features: the survival of communities whose subsistence strategies and technologies closely resemble those documented archaeologically for earlier periods; the extraordinary continuity of craft traditions across millennia; and the coexistence within a single geographically bounded region of communities ranging from hunter-gatherers to pastoralists to complex urban societies, providing what some researchers have called a living museum of economic and social types.

The Government of India's People of India project (1985 to 1992), coordinated by the Anthropological Survey of India under K.S. Singh, documented 4,635 communities across India, providing a comprehensive ethnographic baseline invaluable for ethnoarchaeological research. The project recorded material culture, subsistence practices, craft traditions, and social organisation across communities rarely described in systematic anthropological terms.

Hunter-Gatherer Communities as Living Analogues

The Significance of Living Hunter-Gatherers

Hunter-gatherers are of special importance to archaeologists because all humans were hunter-gatherers for the first 95 to 99 percent of human existence. The archaeological record before approximately 10,000 years ago is almost exclusively the record of hunting and gathering societies. Understanding how such societies are organised, how they use and discard material culture, how they move across the landscape, and how they structure their campsites is essential for interpreting the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeological record.

India retains several communities that have continued, until very recently, to subsist primarily through hunting, gathering, and fishing. These include the Andamanese (particularly the Jarawa and Sentinelese), the Birhor of Jharkhand, the Chenchus of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the Kadar and Cholanaickan of Kerala, the Malapandaram of the Kerala hills, the Nayaka of Tamil Nadu, the Yanadi of Andhra Pradesh, the Onge of Little Andaman, and the Hill Pandaram of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Birhor: The Wandering Hunters

The Birhor of Jharkhand (studied extensively by S.C. Roy in The Birhors, 1925) are among the most thoroughly documented hunter-gatherer communities in India. Their name means men of the jungle (bir = jungle, hor = man). The Birhor traditionally subsisted by hunting monkeys (particularly langur) using nets, gathering forest produce, and manufacturing and selling ropes from the bark of the bauhinia creeper. They lived in small, mobile bands (tanda) that moved across a defined home range.

Ethnoarchaeologically, the Birhor are significant because their pattern of residential mobility closely resembles the mobility pattern inferred for Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers from the distribution of stone tools across the landscape. Their lightweight, portable material culture (minimal investment in permanent structures, emphasis on transportable tools and containers) parallels the material record of mobile Palaeolithic groups. The spatial organisation of their campsites, with sleeping huts, hearths, processing areas, and refuse dumps in characteristic patterns, provides direct analogues for interpreting the spatial organisation of prehistoric campsites. Their use of natural shelters, rock overhangs, and lean-to structures, and the material signatures these leave, has been compared with the occupation of rock shelters documented at sites like Bhimbetka.

Chenchus of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

The Chenchus inhabit the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve and adjacent forests of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Studied by Christoph von Furer-Haimendorf in The Chenchus: Jungle Folk of Deccan (1943), they traditionally subsisted by gathering forest tubers, fruits, honey, and small game. Furer-Haimendorf documented their intimate ecological knowledge of the forest, their seasonal movement patterns following the availability of different food resources, and their material culture.

The Chenchus are ethnoarchaeologically significant because the Nallamalai hills they inhabit contain numerous Mesolithic and early historic rock art sites alongside extensive surface scatters of microlithic stone tools. The spatial distribution of Chenchu camps in relation to water sources, shade, and food resources provides a framework for interpreting the distribution of prehistoric campsites in the same landscape.

Andamanese: Island Hunter-Gatherers

The Andamanese, comprising the Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa, and Sentinelese, represent some of the most isolated hunter-gatherer populations in the world. Radcliffe-Brown's monograph The Andaman Islanders (1922), though primarily concerned with social structure and ritual, contains detailed descriptions of material culture including canoes, bows and arrows, pottery, and fire use, all directly relevant to the interpretation of archaeological evidence from the Andaman Islands.

The Onge of Little Andaman, studied by Vishvajit Pandya, have provided important ethnoarchaeological data on the use of marine resources, the spatial organisation of beach camps, and the discard patterns of shell middens, directly relevant to the interpretation of the large Andamanese shell middens that mark many prehistoric occupation sites.

Fishing Communities

Communities practising traditional net fishing, line fishing, trap fishing, and shellfish collecting along the coasts and riverbanks of India provide important analogues for interpreting the archaeological signatures of past fishing economies. Shell middens, accumulations of discarded shells representing long periods of shellfish consumption, are among the most informative archaeological sites in coastal India. Ethnoarchaeological study of the formation, stratigraphy, and spatial organisation of contemporary shell middens by fishing communities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh has refined the methods for interpreting prehistoric middens.

The fishing communities of the Chilika Lake region of Odisha have been studied ethnoarchaeologically for their boat-building traditions, net-making techniques, and fish-processing practices. The spatial organisation of their waterfront camps, with areas for net repair, fish drying, boat storage, and cooking, provides analogues for interpreting the archaeological remains of prehistoric fishing settlements along the Odisha coast and the Krishna-Godavari delta.

Studies of fish-bone processing and discard patterns among contemporary fishing communities have shown that the spatial distribution of fish bones in archaeological sites does not simply reflect the location where fish were eaten but is heavily influenced by processing, cleaning, and refuse disposal practices. This insight has substantially changed the interpretation of fish-bone assemblages at Indian coastal archaeological sites.

Pastoral Communities

The Significance of Pastoralist Ethnoarchaeology

Pastoralism is archaeologically one of the most difficult economies to document because pastoral peoples are typically mobile, make relatively small material investments in fixed settlements, and leave thin, ephemeral archaeological traces compared with sedentary agriculturalists. Yet pastoralism has been a major subsistence strategy in South Asia since the domestication of cattle, sheep, and goats in the early Neolithic, and understanding pastoralist archaeology is essential for interpreting the extensive evidence of mobile herding communities in the prehistoric record.

India retains numerous communities with active pastoralist traditions. The Gujjars and Bakkarwals of Jammu, Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh; the Rebari, Bharwad, and Charan of Gujarat and Rajasthan; the Toda of the Nilgiri Hills; the Dhangar of Maharashtra; and the Kuruba of Karnataka are among the many pastoral and semi-pastoral communities studied with ethnoarchaeological interests in mind.

The Todas of the Nilgiri Hills

The Toda of the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu are one of the most studied communities in Indian anthropology. Documented by W.H.R. Rivers in The Todas (1906), the Todas are pastoralists specialising in water buffalo herding with an elaborate ritual complex centred on the dairy. Their settlement pattern, consisting of small hamlets (mund) arranged across the Nilgiri plateau in a pattern related to ceremonial dairy locations, grazing territories, and social clan affiliations, has been used as an analogue for interpreting Iron Age pastoral settlements in southern India.

The spatial organisation of Toda munds, each comprising a few circular huts with a common area and a central dairy building, the pattern of animal pens, and the distribution of dung deposits and refuse middens have all been documented in ethnoarchaeological terms and compared with patterns seen at excavated Iron Age pastoral sites in the Nilgiris and Tamil Nadu.

Rebari and Bharwad of Gujarat and Rajasthan

The Rebari and Bharwad are camel and cattle pastoralists of Gujarat and Rajasthan who practice seasonal transhumance, moving their herds between winter pastures in the lowlands and summer pastures in the hills and semi-arid zones. Their temporary camp sites, established during migration, are particularly important for ethnoarchaeological comparison with the short-term occupation sites documented in the prehistoric Thar desert and Saurashtra coast.

Ethnoarchaeological studies of Rebari camps have documented the spatial organisation of tent sites, animal enclosures, dung burning areas, water collection pits, and refuse disposal zones. The differential preservation potential of different site elements has been directly observed and used to model what would survive in the archaeological record of similar past camps. The Rebari's specialised ceramic assemblage for dairy processing has been compared with archaeologically recovered pottery assemblages from Chalcolithic and Early Historic sites in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Arts and Crafts Producing Communities

Pottery Production Communities

Pottery is one of the most abundant and chronologically sensitive categories of archaeological material. India retains an extraordinary diversity of traditional pottery-making communities using a wide range of techniques including hand-building, coiling, slab construction, wheel throwing, and moulding. The Kumhar caste is the hereditary potter community of most of northern India. Regional specialisations produce distinctive ceramic traditions in virtually every part of the country.

Ethnoarchaeological studies of Indian potters have generated several important insights. Documentation of the entire chaîne operatoire from clay procurement through forming, surface treatment, drying, firing, and distribution has been used to interpret the technological traces left by prehistoric potters across South Asia. Ethnoarchaeological study of functioning kilns, their construction, operation, fuel use, and characteristic debris patterns when abandoned, has substantially improved the identification and interpretation of kiln remains at sites ranging from the Harappan to the medieval period. The distribution of pottery from particular production centres to consumer settlements provides models for understanding the exchange networks reflected in the distribution of specific ceramic types across archaeological sites. Contemporary pottery style zones in India often correlate with linguistic, caste, or regional boundaries, suggesting that similar patterning in prehistoric ceramic distributions may reflect social rather than purely functional factors.

Iron and Metal Working Communities

The Agaria of Madhya Pradesh, documented by Verrier Elwin in The Agaria (1942), are a community of traditional iron smelters who have maintained bloomery smelting practices largely unchanged for centuries. Their smelting sites, including ore processing areas, charcoal production pits, furnace remains, slag deposits, and bloom processing areas, have been directly compared with Iron Age smelting sites excavated across central and peninsular India. The spatial organisation, technological signatures (slag morphology, furnace types, ore processing debris), and refuse disposal patterns documented at Agaria smelting sites have provided crucial analogues for interpreting the archaeometallurgical record of Iron Age India.

The Lohar (hereditary blacksmiths) of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have been studied for the light they shed on the use and discard of iron tools, the spatial organisation of smithing areas, and the characteristic debris of anvil scale, hammerscale, and tool fragments that accumulates in smithing contexts. These observations have improved the identification of smithing activity areas at medieval and post-medieval archaeological sites.

Stone Tool Manufacturing Communities

The Jalari of Andhra Pradesh and some communities in the Bellary region of Karnataka have maintained traditions of pressure-flaking of stone tools well into the 20th century. Ethnoarchaeological study of these communities documented the entire chaîne operatoire of stone tool production from raw material procurement through platform preparation, core reduction, flake selection, and tool finishing, producing documented assemblages of manufacturing debris (debitage) that can be directly compared with prehistoric lithic assemblages.

Studies by V.N. Misra and colleagues at Deccan College, Pune, pioneered the use of ethnoarchaeological observations of stone tool use and discard among communities in Rajasthan and Maharashtra as analogues for interpreting the extensive Mesolithic microlithic assemblages of peninsular India. The Deccan College's long-term programme of ethnoarchaeological research in Rajasthan, particularly around Tilwara and Bagor, combined ethnoarchaeological observation of contemporary camps with systematic survey of Mesolithic and Neolithic surface sites, producing one of the most methodologically integrated regional studies in Indian archaeology.

Living Cultures as Analogues for Archaeological Interpretation

Settlement Pattern Studies

One of the most productive applications of ethnoarchaeology in India has been the use of ethnographic settlement data to interpret prehistoric settlement patterns. Studies of how Indian villages are spatially organised, which activities take place where, how space is divided between domestic and public, ritual and productive, clean and dirty functions, have been used to interpret the spatial organisation of settlements excavated at Harappan, Neolithic, and other prehistoric sites.

The spatial patterning of houses, streets, wells, granaries, workshop areas, and refuse deposits at Harappan sites like Mohenjo-daro and Harappa has been compared with the spatial organisation of contemporary nucleated villages in Sindh and Punjab that maintain traditional construction and spatial organisation. Such comparisons have informed interpretations of Harappan urbanism, social stratification, and the organisation of craft production.

Use of Space and Activity Areas

Activity area analysis, the study of the spatial distribution of archaeological remains to infer where specific activities were performed, is heavily dependent on ethnoarchaeological observation. Studies of how Indian households allocate space for cooking, sleeping, storage, craft production, and social interaction, and how this allocation changes seasonally and with household composition, have provided essential baselines for interpreting the spatial organisation of rooms, courtyards, and outdoor areas at archaeological sites.

The distinction between primary refuse (material discarded at the location of use) and secondary refuse (material swept up and deposited elsewhere) is crucial for activity area analysis but cannot be inferred from the archaeological record alone. Ethnoarchaeological observation of contemporary Indian households' refuse disposal practices, including the sweeping of floors and courtyards and the disposal of different categories of refuse in different locations (organic refuse in kitchen gardens, broken pottery in specific dumps, ashes in particular locations), has substantially improved the interpretation of refuse distributions at Indian archaeological sites.

Ritual and Symbolic Dimensions of Material Culture

A persistent limitation of purely processual ethnoarchaeology was its relative neglect of the symbolic, ritual, and ideological dimensions of material culture. Post-processual archaeologists argued that material culture is not merely a passive reflection of economic behaviour but an active medium of social and symbolic communication, and that its interpretation requires attention to meaning as well as function.

In India, ethnographic documentation of the ritual uses of specific materials (ochre, cowrie shells, specific pottery forms, iron objects), the symbolic significance of architectural features (threshold spaces, hearth locations, orientation of houses), and the material dimensions of ritual practice (votive deposits, burial goods, sacred grove boundaries) has proved directly relevant to interpreting material found in religious, mortuary, and ritual contexts at Indian archaeological sites.

The extensive literature on contemporary tribal ritual and symbolic life, including the work of Elwin on the Baiga and Gond, S.C. Roy on the Munda and Oraon, and subsequent generations of Indian anthropologists, has provided an invaluable framework for interpreting the rock art, ochre deposits, structured deposits, and burial practices documented at Mesolithic and Neolithic sites in peninsular India.

Critiques and Limitations of Ethnoarchaeology

Despite its considerable achievements, ethnoarchaeology faces several important critiques:

  • The uniformitarian assumption:: Ethnoarchaeology assumes that the relationship between behaviour and material culture is sufficiently stable over time that observations made today can be applied to the past. Critics argue that this assumption is undermined by the profound changes in technology, economy, and society that have occurred between the prehistoric past and the ethnographic present.
  • The problem of uniqueness:: Every ethnographic case is historically specific and embedded in particular social, ecological, and historical contexts. The direct application of ethnographic analogy to the archaeological record may import assumptions and associations that are specific to the ethnographic case rather than being general features of the type of society being reconstructed.
  • Selective analogy:: Archaeologists may consciously or unconsciously select ethnographic analogies that confirm their prior interpretations, using ethnoarchaeology to illustrate rather than test archaeological reconstructions.
  • The impact of modernity:: Even the most isolated contemporary communities have been affected by broader economic, political, and cultural forces. The Birhor of Jharkhand today are significantly different from their 19th-century counterparts described by S.C. Roy, and it is not clear how far either set of observations can be applied to Mesolithic populations thousands of years in the past.
  • Equifinality:: Different behaviours can produce identical material patterns (equifinality), meaning that a given pattern of artefact distribution, discard, or spatial organisation can be produced by multiple different processes. No single ethnographic analogy can resolve this ambiguity without additional independent evidence.

Despite these limitations, ethnoarchaeology remains an indispensable component of archaeological method in India. The extraordinary diversity of Indian communities and the depth of ethnographic documentation accumulated over more than a century of anthropological research in the subcontinent make India uniquely positioned to continue making major contributions to the global programme of ethnoarchaeological research.
