Concept of Cultural Evolution in Prehistory
Cultural evolution refers to the change in human behaviour, technology, social organization, and symbolic life over time. In prehistoric archaeology, cultural evolution is reconstructed not from written records but from the material residues of past behaviour stone tools, animal bones, plant remains, architecture, art, and burial practices. Unlike biological evolution, which proceeds through genetic transmission, cultural evolution operates through learning, imitation, and the accumulation of knowledge across generations. The direction of cultural evolution is generally though not unilinearly from simpler to more complex, and from homogeneity to heterogeneity. Changes in subsistence strategy (hunting-gathering → horticulture → agriculture → pastoralism) drove broader social, demographic, and cognitive transformations.
Lower Palaeolithic (Mode 1 and 2)
The Lower Palaeolithic encompasses the earliest period of tool use, from the first appearance of stone tools (~3.3-2.6 million years ago) to approximately 250,000-300,000 years ago. Associated hominins are Homo habilis (Mode 1 Oldowan) and Homo erectus (Mode 2 Acheulian).
Oldowan culture (Mode 1):: Named after Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. Core tools and sharp-edged flakes used for butchering (cut and percussion marks on animal bones), marrow extraction, and possibly plant processing. Sites classified as butchering sites, quarrying sites, and possible home bases (Isaac's hypothesis of central-place foraging). Evidence of scavenging more than active hunting in earliest phases. The Oldowan persisted for over a million years and was the dominant technology of early African Homo.
Acheulian culture (Mode 2):: Beginning ~1.76 million years ago, associated with Homo erectus. Characterized by bifacially worked hand axes and cleavers symmetrical, teardrop-shaped, all-purpose tools. Acheulian assemblages spread throughout Africa and Europe; Asian Homo erectus made choppers instead. Major cultural advances of the Acheulian period include the controlled use of fire (earliest well-accepted date at Zhoukoudian cave, China, after 500,000 years ago; disputed evidence in Africa at 1.5 mya and France at 750,000 ya); construction of basic shelters (Terra Amata site in Nice, France, ~400,000 years, with several huts with central hearths); and expansion out of Africa into Asia and Europe. The Acheulian hand axe persisted for over a million years, making it one of the longest-lived technologies in human history.
Indian Lower Palaeolithic:: The Sohan (Soan) industry of the Punjab/northwest (characterized by choppers, chopping tools, and flakes) and the Madrasian (Acheulian) industry of peninsular India are the two main traditions. They broadly correspond to the Mode 1 and Mode 2 distinction. Major sites include Pahalgam (J&K), Nevasa (Maharashtra), and numerous handaxe localities in the Deccan. The Indian environmental hypothesis links variations in tool types to ecological zonation forest-adapted choppers in the north-east, and open savanna-adapted handaxe makers in the peninsular zones.
Middle Palaeolithic (Mode 3)
Dates broadly to ~300,000-40,000 years ago. Associated with Homo neanderthalensis in Europe and West Asia, and with archaic Homo sapiens in Africa. Characterized by the Levallois technique preparation of a core in a specific form so that a predetermined flake of controlled shape can be struck. This demonstrates significantly greater cognitive planning than earlier technologies.
Mousterian culture (Europe/West Asia):: Named after Le Moustier, France. Diverse tool assemblage including scrapers, points, denticulates, and notched tools. Neanderthals who produced Mousterian tools were fully cultural beings: they buried their dead with grave goods (Shanidar Cave, Iraq evidence of flowers placed over a burial; La Chapelle-aux-Saints, France 1,620 cc skull with bison leg and flint tools around the body); they used ochre and personal ornaments; they lived in structured base camps; some evidence of cannibalism (El Sidrón, Spain, 49,000 ya 12 individuals butchered, reflecting patrilocal mating structure inferred from genetic analysis of adult males being closely related while females were not).
Indian Middle Palaeolithic:: The Nevasan industry of the Pravara valley (Maharashtra) and flake tool industries of the Deccan represent the Indian Middle Palaeolithic, broadly contemporaneous with the Mousterian. Characterized by scrapers, points, and blades struck from prepared cores, but the Levallois technique is not as well-defined as in Europe.
Upper Palaeolithic (Mode 4)
Dates broadly to ~50,000-10,000 years ago. Associated with anatomically modern humans globally. Characterized by blade technology long parallel-sided flakes at least twice as long as wide, struck from prismatic cores. The Upper Palaeolithic is the first period for which unambiguous evidence of a fully modern behavioural repertoire exists: abstract and figurative art, personal ornaments, musical instruments, long-distance trade in raw materials, and complex mortuary practices.
European Upper Palaeolithic cultures:: Aurignacian (earliest; associated with cave art Chauvet cave, France, ~36,000 ya; figurines Venus figurines; personal ornaments); Gravettian (Venus figurines; mammoth bone structures; long-distance exchange networks); Solutrean (finest pressure-flaked tools Solutrean leaf points, experimentally reproduced by Leakey, Crabtree, and Bordes); Magdalenian (most elaborate cave art Lascaux, France, ~17,000 ya; Altamira, Spain; carved antler and bone tools; harpoons).
Prehistoric art Bhimbetka and Indian rock art:: The richest concentration of prehistoric rock art in India is at Bhimbetka (Raisen district, MP), discovered in 1957-58 by V.S. Wakankar, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over 800 rock shelters with more than 600 painted caves, the largest concentration at one site in the world. Provides a continuous artistic sequence from the Palaeolithic through the historical period. Chronological stages: Stage 1 (hunters-gatherers in symbols/petroglyphs Palaeolithic to Mesolithic); Stage 2 (hunting and dancing scenes Mesolithic); Stage 3 (settled agriculturists with pottery Neolithic/Chalcolithic); Stage 4 (early historic period horses, armed men, religious symbols). Chief subject matter: zoo-morphs (29 animal species deer most common, then boar, bison, elephant, tiger, rhino, neelgai), anthropomorphs, hunting scenes, dancing, family activities. Animals painted naturalistically; humans stylistically or as matchstick figures, sometimes in X-ray style. Pigments: iron oxide (geru/haematite) for red the most common; limestone for white; charcoal, manganese, or soot for black; chalcedony for green and yellow. Blue was largely absent. Possible purposes: sympathetic magic (hunting rituals), shamanism, fertility cult, leisure, visual record. First discovery of rock paintings in the world was in India in 1867-68 by Archibold Carlleyle in Sohagighat (Kaimur hills, Mirzapur). Konkan petroglyphs (UNESCO Tentative List) 600+ figures along 900 km of Maharashtra and Goa coast, ~30,000 years old, classified as the world's oldest known rock art ensemble. Daraki-Chattan (MP) cupules dated to 300,000-70,000 BC, attributed to Homo erectus (Bednarik), discovered by Ramesh Kumar Pancholi in 1993. Lakhudiyar (Almora, Uttarakhand) prehistoric rock paintings including lizard motifs.
Indian Upper Palaeolithic:: Characterized by blade and burin industries, found at sites across the Deccan, Rajasthan, and UP. Bhimbetka's earliest occupation layers date to this period. Ostrich eggshell beads from Patne (Maharashtra) provide direct evidence of personal ornamentation.
Mesolithic Period
The Mesolithic broadly corresponds to the early Holocene after the end of the last Ice Age (~10,000 BCE) and before the adoption of food production. The Pleistocene-to-Holocene transition involved: temperature increase of 5-10°C; melting of continental ice sheets; sea-level rise of up to 120 m flooding previously exposed coastal plains; ecological diversification as arctic tundra gave way to temperate vegetation; extinction of Pleistocene megafauna (mammoths, giant deer); and increased regional differentiation of human cultures.
Characteristic features of the Mesolithic:: Toolkit microliths (under 3 cm, too small for direct use, hafted in composite tools: bows/arrows, harpoons, knives); geometric and non-geometric forms (lunates/crescents, triangles, trapezes, transverse arrowheads, blades, points); made by pressure-flaking technique from quartz, chert, agate, chalcedony. Subsistence hunting of small and medium animals (deer, antelope, wild boar), fishing, bird hunting (including extinct ostrich), plant gathering (nuts, fruits, tubers, seeds, honey); primitive querns and rubbing-stones; first signs of food storage. Incipient domestication Bagor (Rajasthan), Adamgarh (MP), Loteshwar and Ratanpura (north Gujarat) yielded bones of domesticated sheep, goat, cattle, and dog. Settlements semi-sedentary lifestyle near rivers, lakes, and uplands; circular or oval huts with post-holes at Bagor and Mahadaha; increased dependence on localized resource base the first step toward village life. Socio-cultural complexity rock paintings (Bhimbetka scenes of daily life, hunting, dance); burials with grave goods (Bagor, Langhnaj, Sarai Nahar Rai, Mahadaha evidence of belief in afterlife, social differentiation); occasional double burials; evidence of intergroup conflict.
West Asian Mesolithic (Epipaleolithic):: Levant: Kebaran culture (~23,000-13,000 BCE) beginning of microliths and wild cereal collection; Natufian culture (~13,000-9,500 BCE, named after Wadi Natuf, Israel/Palestine) intensive collection of wild cereals (wheat, barley) and semi-sedentary life; Ain Mallaha and Shanidar Cave. Zagros: Zarzian culture. European Mesolithic: Western Europe Azilian (microliths, painted pebbles), Asturian (shell middens, coastal adaptation), Tardenoisian (geometric microliths), Campignian (later microlithic, crude pottery). Northern Europe Maglemosian (forest/lake/swamp adaptation, canoes, woodwork, advanced bone tools, harpoons). Eastern Europe Lepenski Vir (Balkans remarkable fish-based subsistence, sedentary villages, distinctive fish-human hybrid sculptures).
Indian Mesolithic sites:: First microliths discovered in India by A.C.L. Carlyle in Mirzapur; Robert Bruce Foote (Father of Indian Prehistory) discovered microliths in Kurnool caves and Gujarat. Nearly 60 radiocarbon and 8 TL dates from over 20 sites; Mesolithic people lived between 10,000 and 2,000 BP. Major sites: Bagor (Rajasthan, Kothari River; excavated by V.N. Misra 1973-77; best documented site; richest microlithic assemblage worldwide; 40+ tool types; earliest domesticated animals from Phase I cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig 80% faunal remains domesticated; dental evidence of dietary transition; Kenneth Kennedy identified male and female skeletons); Langhnaj (Gujarat, Sabarmati River, Mehsana; excavated by H.D. Sankalia and Irawati Karve, 1940s; microliths, querns, grinders, animal bones; careful burials; radiocarbon ~2000 BC, proving Mesolithic and mature Harappan coexisted within 100-200 km); Adamgarh (MP; 5,000 microliths, 250 kg waste flakes; locally sourced chert, chalcedony, jasper, agate; evidence of incipient animal domestication); Bhimbetka (MP; Mesolithic occupation with contact with Chalcolithic farmers); Ganga valley sites: Chopani Mando (Belan Valley, Allahabad most complete Early Mesolithic to Neolithic sequence); Sarai Nahar Rai, Mahadaha, Damdama (E-W oriented burials; animal bones including possibly domesticated cattle, buffalo, sheep); Teri sites (Tamil Nadu 11 microlithic clusters on red fossilized sand dunes, quartz and chert microliths only, all organic material decayed, Robert Bruce Foote discovery); Birbhanpur (West Bengal); Kuchai (Odisha); Sangankallu (Karnataka).
Neolithic Period
The Neolithic marks the transition to food production cultivation of plants and domestication of animals and is broadly dated ~10,000-3,000 BCE (region-specific). The term Neolithic was introduced by Sir John Lubbock in 1865.
Characteristic features:: Domestication of plants and animals leading to food surplus; ground and polished stone tools (celt/polished axe, adze, chisel, hoe, sickle, grinding stones, querns, pestles collectively "heavy-duty tools"); introduction of pottery (storage jars, cooking pots, bowls e.g. linear pottery culture in Europe, painted pottery at Mehrgarh); sedentism and permanent villages (mud, stone, or wattle-and-daub houses; grain storage facilities); population increase; economy and trade (surpluses enabled barter; exchange of shells and semi-precious stones); social organization (kinship-based structures; division of labour; social differentiation reflected in grave goods); art and craft (decorated pottery; specialized stone, bone, antler ornaments); religion (fertility/mother goddess figurines Çatalhöyük Turkey, Mehrgarh; fire altars; burial practices).
Origin of food production West Asia:: The Fertile Crescent (half-moon shaped plain in the Levant and Zagros mountains) was the first region to develop agriculture (~9,500-8,500 BCE). Eight founder crops: einkorn wheat, emmer wheat, barley, lentil, pea, chickpea, bitter vetch, flax. Levantine sequence: Early Natufian (~14,000-12,000 BCE, Ain Mallaha mobile hunter-gatherers); Late Natufian/Proto-Neolithic (~12,000-9,500 BCE, Jericho sedentism without domestication); PPNA (~9,500-8,500 BCE, Jericho sedentism + early domestication); PPNB (~8,500-6,000 BCE full Neolithic); Pottery Neolithic (~6,000-4,500 BCE).
Theories of food production origin:: Oasis/Desiccation Theory (V. Gordon Childe) post-Ice Age desiccation forced humans, animals, and plants to cluster around oases, proximity leading to domestication; criticized because climate was actually improving in the Fertile Crescent. Hilly Flanks/Nuclear Zone Theory (Robert Braidwood) domestication occurred naturally in the hilly flanks of the Fertile Crescent where wild ancestors of wheat, barley, sheep, and goat lived; criticized for explaining the where but not the why. Population Pressure/Edge Zone Theory (Lewis Binford) improved climate → population growth in optimal zones → marginal populations forced to intensify food production; criticized because some early sites show abundance before domestication. Broad Spectrum Revolution (Kent Flannery) exploitation of wider food range as pre-adaptation to agriculture; describes how more than why. Coevolutionary Theory (David Rindos) domestication was an unconscious process of mutualism; downplays human intentionality. Feasting/Competitive Display Model (Brian Hayden) ambitious individuals drove surplus production for social prestige; requires social complexity to precede domestication. Symbolic Revolution Theory (Jacques Cauvin) change in human psychology (worship of wild bulls and mother goddesses) preceded and motivated domestication; difficult to test archaeologically. Current consensus: agriculture was multicausal, protracted, and arose independently in at least 10-12 regions worldwide: China (millet, Yellow River; rice, Yangtze), Southeast Asia (banana, sugarcane, coconut), India (rice, millets, pulses, cotton, sesame), Africa (sorghum, pearl millet), Mesoamerica (maize), Andes (potato, quinoa).
Neolithic Revolution (V. Gordon Childe):: Childe coined the term in the 1920s-30s for him, the shift to food production was an economic revolution comparable to the Industrial Revolution, releasing communities from dependence on wild food supply, enabling surplus, storage, property, craft specialization, trade, social stratification, and emergence of cities and states. The "Neolithic package" sedentism, tools, pottery, agriculture, animal domestication was Childe's model. However, archaeological data shows these did not always coincide: sedentism predates domestication in the Levant (Natufian); pottery predates agriculture in East Asia; animal domestication does not always coincide with plant domestication. It is therefore more accurate to speak of Neolithic transitions (region-specific, protracted, often 3,000-4,000 years) than a singular revolution. Mixed economies (hunting-gathering + farming) persisted through the Neolithic in most regions.
Indian Neolithic regional zones:: VD Krishnaswami (1959) divided Indian Neolithic into four zones: Northern (Kashmir pit-dwelling, pointed butt-celts); Eastern (shouldered celts, little pottery Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Assam); Central/Western (microliths and pot sherds Malwa, north Maharashtra); Southern (broad butt-end celts Brahmagiri, Sangankallu, Piklihal). HD Sankalia (1962) observed that many Indian sites show combined Neolithic-Chalcolithic traits ("Neo-Chalcolithic").
Mehrgarh (Balochistan, ~7000 BCE):: Located near Bolan Pass, Balochistan; discovered in 1977 by a French team led by Jarrige. Seven cultural layers from aceramic Neolithic through the Harappan era. Covers 200+ hectares one of the largest settlements between the Indus and the Mediterranean. Provides the earliest clear evidence of farming and pastoralism in the Indian subcontinent: cultivation of barley and possibly wheat (~7000 BCE); cotton seeds; sheep, goat, and cattle domesticated by ~6000 BCE. Later phases show craft specialization and long-distance trade (ivory, shell, lapis lazuli, carnelian). Rectangular mud-brick compartmentalized structures. The agricultural tradition at Mehrgarh forms the village base for the later urban Indus Civilization.
Neolithic of Kashmir Valley:: Occupied from ~3,000-2,500 BCE (RC dates 2,500-1,500 BC); appears to represent migration from outside; aceramic stage and pit dwellings are noteworthy variations. Over 40 sites. Most important: Burzahom (first explored by Yale-Cambridge Expedition in 1936; ASI work 1960s-70s; underground dwelling pits with hearths; in later era pits abandoned for overground huts including a large rectangular structure with 42 post-holes possibly a community hall; earliest subsistence was animal husbandry and hunting; wheat, barley, mansur, pea, clove cultivated; developed bone tool industry is a diagnostic trait; copper tools in later era; domesticated dog burials; connected material-cultural zones West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia) and Gufkral (older than Burzahom; aceramic base followed by ceramic Neolithic).
Vindhya-Ganga Valley Neolithic:: Continuous Stone Age sequence in Belan sites (Chopani Mando, Mahagara, Koldihwa). Proto-Neolithic (~9th/8th millennium BCE) pre-food producing. Early Neolithic very early dates for paddy cultivation (7th-5th millennium BCE); domestic animal remains; thatched huts at Mahagara. Late Neolithic (~3rd-2nd millennium BCE) Chalcolithic characteristics intrude. Earliest cultivated rice evidence in the Indian subcontinent is from this zone.
Northeastern India:: Daojali Hading (stratified site, North Cachar Hills, Assam) ground stone tools (celts, shouldered axe), cord-impressed pottery. No RC dates; Sankalia inferred 5000-1000 BC. Parallels with eastern and SE Asian Neolithic cultures (Yangshao, Langshanoid of China, Hoabinhian of Thailand).
Deccan/South India Neolithic (Ash Mound sites):: Farming emerged late in the Deccan plateau (no sharp boundary with metal age Neo-Chalcolithic). Over 100 Neolithic sites in Karnataka, Andhra, Tamil Nadu. Main crops: ragi and hulgi (millets). Animal husbandry was primary (80-85% bones of humpless cattle and buffalo); agriculture secondary. Village farming began ~3,000-2,500 BCE. Distinctive feature: Ash Mound sites (Utnur, Piklihal, Palavoy, Sanganakallu/Kupgal, Kodekal, Budihal, Hulikallu) large deposits of burnt cattle dung accumulated in and around cattle pens. At Utnur: hoof impressions in ash and remains of fenced wooden stockades showing controlled cattle penning. At Budihal: hoof impressions beneath dung layers plus a butchering floor. Periodic burning episodes suggest symbolic or ritual importance resembling present-day south Indian practices.
Chalcolithic Period
The Chalcolithic (from Greek chalkos copper, lithos stone) marks the transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age, characterized by the simultaneous use of stone and copper tools. In India, Chalcolithic communities were agro-pastoral and non-urban they never attained the level of the Harappan cities. They emerged before the Harappan age, existed in parallel to it, and continued after its decline.
Gandhara Grave Culture (GGC), Swat and Dir Valleys:: Sites: Timargarha, Balambat, Ghaligai Caves. RC dates: 2500-1800 BCE. Two-storied rectangular grave structures separated by stone slabs; multiple burial styles (flexed inhumation, cremation + urn burial, fractional burial). Copper-bronze objects including ornaments and weapons. Pottery with Central Asian affinity; lapis lazuli indicating contact with Badakhshan. Wide prevalence of dwelling pits similar to Neolithic Kashmir. Connects the Indus Valley Civilization and later urban societies. Excavated by Ahmad Hasan Dani.
Cemetery H Culture (Punjab):: Post-urban phase of western Punjab; pottery first discovered in Cemetery H at Harappa (excavator: MS Vats). Two burial types: extended inhumations (earliest) and bone deposition in urns (later). Grave goods: pottery, sacrifice of sheep or goat. Paintings on urns (peacocks, bulls, goat, dog). ASI analysis shows four cranial types across strata. Earlier Wheeler-era theory that Cemetery H represented Indo-Aryan invaders is now largely rejected; Kenoyer (1991) argues it reflects only a change in settlement organization, not cultural discontinuity.
Ochre Coloured Pottery (OCP) Culture Northern Zone:: Named after its characteristic redware with red slip; 2nd millennium BC; confined to Ganga-Yamuna Doab (absent from Indus Valley). Two groups: NE Rajasthan (Ganeshwar-Jodhpura cluster, 2800-2000 BCE; over 1,000 copper objects including arrowheads, spearheads, fish-hooks; extensive copper smelting; supplied copper to Harappan cities like Kalibangan; excavated by R.C. Agrawal); Western UP (2000 BCE onward; Lal Qila, Atranjikhera, Saipai; B.B. Lal coined the term "OCP culture" after excavating Hastinapur in 1951-52; wattle-and-daub houses with rice husks in mud plaster; early agriculture rice and barley; OCP succeeded by BRW and PGW).
Copper Hoard Culture:: Thousands of copper hoards found from surface across northern India. Dates ~2000-1500 BCE. Objects: swords with antennae hilts, harpoons, anthropomorphs, various axes, ornaments beaten and cast from pure copper. First major discovery: Gungeria (MP) 400+ objects weighing 350 kg. Distribution: Upper Ganga/Doab zone; extends to Rajasthan, Bengal, Deccan, Kerala, south Tamil Nadu. Over 100 copper hoards found. OCP-Copper Hoard relationship remains "one of the knottiest problems of Indian archaeology." Sinauli (UP, OCP culture, ~2000-1800 BCE): 2018 excavation (Sanjay Kumar Manjul, ASI) three wooden chariots sheathed in copper (first on Indian subcontinent); 116 human burials in four-legged wooden copper-ornamented coffins; copper antenna swords; anthropomorphic copper masks and horned crowns; women buried with weapons suggesting gender equality or female warriors; peepal leaf motifs on coffins.
Ahar/Banas Culture (SE Rajasthan, 2600-1500 BCE): 60+ sites; most extensively excavated: Ahar, Gilund, Balathal. Closest to Harappans geographically. Active copper smelting region supplied copper to Harappan cities. Balathal: stone-mud-mudbrick houses; fortified central enclosure implying internecine conflicts.
Kayatha Culture (Malwa, MP, 2500-2000 BCE): 40+ settlements on Chambal tributaries. Mixed economy (farming, stock raising, hunting-fishing); cattle and sheep/goat domesticated; horse remains found. Small huts with wattle-and-daub walls and thatched roof. Culture arose suddenly with no local antecedents; ended suddenly (possibly earthquake).
Malwa Culture (MP, 1900-1400 BCE):: Most predominant Chalcolithic culture of central India. Major sites: Navdatoli (possibly largest village), Nagda, Eran. Crops: wheat, barley, jowar, rice, legumes, oilseeds. Livestock: cattle, sheep, goat, pig. Malwa ceramics more richly decorated than Harappan. Rich stone blade industry plus copper objects. Terracotta mother goddess figurines; male figures in painted wares; terracotta bull figurines; fire altars. Declined around 1400 BCE (Dhavalikar attributes this to climatic deterioration).
Jorwe Culture (Maharashtra, 1600-700 BCE):: Most important and characteristic Chalcolithic culture of Maharashtra. Named after type-site Jorwe (Ahmadnagar district); best documented at Inamgaon (Ghod river). Over 200 documented sites. Dry-farming adapted to inland regions; heavy dependence on irrigation (evidence found); crop rotation practiced; wheat, barley, rice in early phases, later millets. Cotton found. Some granaries. Animal husbandry and hunting/fishing ancillary. Evidence of hereditary chiefdom society (Dhavalikar): presence of administrative structures protective fortifications, rampart and moat, granaries, embankment and canals (at Inamgaon). Religion: mother goddess worship; fire altars; Daimabad jar painting of deity surrounded by animals (tigers, peacocks) similar to Shiva Pashupati seal from Mohenjo-daro. Daimabad Bronze Treasure (cattle, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo in bronze) most spectacular Chalcolithic bronzes in India. Burials: adults in extended position buried under house floors in N-S orientation; children in urn-burials under house floors. Iron Age and Megalithic Tradition
Iron Age in India
Iron technology replaced copper and bronze as the dominant metal for implements and weapons during the 2nd-1st millennia BCE. Antiquity of iron in India is debated. D.K. Chakrabarti argued that iron metallurgy developed independently in India with more than one centre of origin, not diffused from West Asia or through Indo-Aryan migration. Evidence of iron: Ahar Chalcolithic (middle phase, 2500-2000 BCE); Dadupur (near Lucknow, 1700 BCE); Malhar (UP, ~1800 BCE); Mayiladumparai (Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, ~2200 BCE possibly the oldest Iron Age site in India); Sivakalai (Thamirabarani basin, 1155 BCE earliest global evidence per some claims); Adichanallur (Thamirabarani, 1000 BCE iron objects, gold, skeletons with DNA showing only 8% local Dravidians, rest from diverse world origins). At least six early iron-using centres: Baluchistan/northwest; Indo-Gangetic divide/upper Ganga; Rajasthan; eastern India; Malwa/central India; Vidarbha/Deccan; South India. All are located near iron ore resources.
Painted Grey Ware (PGW) culture (1000-600 BCE):: Associated with the Iron Age of north India. PGW is fine grey pottery made from very fine clay, wheel-made, fired in reducing conditions (~600°C), painted in black geometric designs (lines, criss-crosses, circles, swastika). First identified at Ahichchhatra (1940s); fully understood after excavations at Hastinapur (BB Lal, 1954-55). Over 100 sites in Indo-Gangetic divide and upper Ganga valley. Economy: agriculture (rice at Hastinapur, barley at Noh); animal husbandry; iron tools (sickle, hoe, ploughshare at Jakhera; predominantly weapons); copper continues. Houses of mud, mudbrick, wattle-and-daub. Settlement hierarchy at some sites (Jakhera has proto-urban elements). BB Lal correlated PGW with later Vedic literature and the Kuru-Panchala kingdom sites like Hastinapur, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Mathura mentioned in the Mahabharata all yield PGW. Jim Shaffer noted no cultural discontinuities separating PGW from the protohistoric indigenous culture.
Northern Black Polished Ware (NBPW) culture (700/600-200/100 BCE):: Associated with the second phase of the Iron Age and the second urbanization in the Ganga valley. NBPW is a deluxe fine ware wheel-made, sometimes as thin as 1.5 mm, fired in controlled closed pits in reducing atmosphere; characteristic glossy metallic-sounding surface (due to alignment of mica platelets in the slip); colours include silver, golden, orange, chocolate, pink (dominating: black). First reported at Sarnath (Varanasi, 1904) and Bhita (Prayagraj). Over 1,500 sites, distributed from Taxila and Charsada in the northwest to Amaravati (AP), and from Gujarat to Bengal. Extensive iron technology; diverse crafts (glass, terracotta moulds for figurines, etched carnelian and agate beads, conch and marine shells from Kutch found at Taxila). Features of second urbanization: population growth; ring-wells; drains of burnt brick or pottery pipes; fortifications; coinage (punch-marked coins). NBPW correlated with Buddhist literature and the Mahajanapada era. Iron technology's role in second urbanization debated: D.D. Kosambi and R.S. Sharma iron ploughs cleared forests and enabled intensive farming driving urban growth; DK Chakrabarti farming began in Chalcolithic prior to iron; Niharranjan Ray iron was not necessary for land clearance or plough agriculture; A. Ghosh surplus requires state mechanisms for collection; Makkhan Lal no fundamental changes in iron tools between PGW and NBPW; Dilip Chakrabarti impact of iron technology was gradual, not revolutionary. Conclusion: iron technology sustained, but did not alone cause, the second urbanization.
Megalithic Tradition
South India entered the Megalithic phase from the Neo-Chalcolithic (~1,200 BCE - 300 BCE). Megaliths are large stone structures erected to mark burial sites, generally representing collective burials. Over 1,500 sites, with ~100 excavated. Main concentration in peninsular India, associated with iron. Classified by US Moorti (1994) into burial and commemorative memorials.
Diverse typology:: Dolmen four stone slabs in box-like structure, wholly or partially above/below ground, associated with post-cremation; common in Karnataka (stone supply); Umbrella Stone (Topi-Kal) four slabs topped with large rounded stone; Rock Cut Caves laterite caves with stairs, doorways, chambers, pits, and central roof opening for grave goods; Pit Burials pit with peripheral circular stone blocks as markers; Urn Burials jars buried underground; Sarcophagi boat-shaped terracotta coffins for post-cremation rites of children (stone in hilly areas, terracotta in plains); Menhirs upright huge boulders in parallel alignments (Mudumal, Narayanpet district, Telangana 80 menhirs and 3,000 alignment stones, dated 1,500-2,000 BCE, astronomical significance, UNESCO Tentative List).

Features of megalithic culture:: Subsistence agro-pastoralism; diverse crops (rice, wheat, kodo millet, barley, lentil, black gram, horse gram); iron tools in cultivation; tank irrigation; cattle bones predominate in faunal remains. Technology 33 types of iron tools (axes with crossed iron bands, flanged spades, arrowheads, daggers, tridents, swords, lances, sickles, hoes, horse-bits, lamps); diverse metallurgical techniques (alloying, casting, hammering, forging). Trade non-local grave goods; megaliths located on trade routes; remarkable uniformity of iron tool types across vast area (DK Chakravarti). Social features megaliths near water, stone, and metal sources, outside settlements; collective burials suggest extended family or descent groups; massive labour requirement for megalith erection implies chiefly authority; ancestor worship as a mechanism for chiefly power; large weapons assemblages indicate constant warfare. Religion belief in life after death (grave goods); soul and cosmology concepts; ritual burning and feasting associated with megalith construction (ethnographic parallel: Gond beliefs "shadow" spirit of the dead watches over the village from the memorial stone; S. Mendaly on Gonds of Nuaparha, Odisha).
South Indian vs Northeastern Indian Megaliths:: South Indian megaliths are overwhelmingly funerary, prehistoric-protohistoric, and now an extinct tradition archaeologically documented Iron Age tradition tied to agricultural expansion, metallurgy, and proto-urban networks; diverse and complex burial typologies. Northeastern Indian megaliths (Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya) are primarily commemorative and ritual, range from prehistoric to historical, and are a living tradition today, intimately linked with Tibeto-Burman and Austroasiatic tribes with strong Southeast Asiatic cultural influence; focused on upright menhirs; fewer associated grave goods (the "wealth" is the megalith itself, representing erector's social capital). Common threads: use of large stone, communal effort, commemorative purpose, and association with belief systems.
